A major feature of Helen's life was helping others, particularly those less fortunate than herself. For Christian Aid she took part in the yearly collections, went on sponsored walks and supported the In Their Lifetime programme, as well as specific appeals. She was also involved in several projects of the United Reformed Church in Sunderland. In her work as Head of Education for Tyne & Wear Museums she championed the provision for, and rights of, people with disabilities
